ForCES Project Manager Annual Meeting and International Steering Committee

9-13 December 2013, Hue, Vietnam

o The project management team of ForCES gathered in Hue (Vietnam) for its annual meeting. This event was followed by a visit of a pilot site (in Quang Tri) whose emphasis is on soil protection and watershed management.

o During the annual meeting the progress of the project and the main activities for 2014 were discussed. Regarding progress, all participants were impressed by the good progress of the project especially in five areas:1) the ES monitoring methodology and its adaptation at national level; 2) the FSC ES standard indicators; 3) the identification, development and presentation of various benefit models; 4) the organization of standard development groups in Nepal and Vietnam; 5)and the progress of pilot sites activities where management plans are being finalized.
For what it concerns 2014 planning, the participants highlighted the need for a clear communication strategy as the project will start producing concrete outcomes. Also, progress in monitoring the environmental and social impact of the project at pilot site level are needed together with further refinement of the benefit models through research led by FSC and detailed national market analyses led by national project managers. FSC should also further progress on clarifying ecosystem services identification, management and monitoring within the FSC International Generic Indicators and through an ES guidance that will be developed in the course of 2014.

o The next Annual Meeting will take place in Nepal, either in Kathmandu or close to one of the pilot sites, probably at the end of October 2014. The next International Steering Committee may take place in Bonn by the end of August or beginning of September 2014 once the mid-term review will have been completed.
