International Conference on Sustainable Forest Management Certification for Resilient Ecosystems, Improved Governance and Local Livelihoods

24-25 November 2016, Kathmandu, Nepal

ANSAB, Federation of Community Forestry Users Nepal (FECOFUN), National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) and Relief International (RI), with financial support from the ForCES project and the Swiss Embassy in Nepal, are going to organize an International Conference on “Sustainable Forest Management Certification for Resilient Ecosystem, Improved Governance and Local Livelihoods” in November 24-25, 2016 in Kathmandu, Nepal.


The major objective of this conference is to contribute to the management of sustainable forest, ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation through sharing and exchange of knowledge and practical experiences from Nepal and other countries. The specific objectives are to:

  • share successful national and international good practices on sustainable forest management, ecosystem services, biodiversity conservation, FSC forest certification, and policy; and
  • gather views, issues and options from multiple stakeholders for policy reforms relating to sustainable forest management, payment for ecosystem services and forest carbon emission reductions.

Themes of the conference

The conference will address the following three themes during its sessions:

Theme 1: Existing status, threats and opportunities to biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Sub-themes under Theme 1 include: i) Methods of Ecosystem Services (ES) assessment -biodiversity, forest carbon, water and NTFPs, and
ii) Assessment of ES status, threats and opportunities

Theme 2: Incentives for the preservation of valuable ecosystem services in responsibly managed forests.
Sub-themes under Theme 2 include:
i) FSC forest management standards for ES,
ii) NFSS for Nepal, its development and testing in the field, and
iii) Business model for certified ES (national and international cases).

Theme 3: Sustainable forest management for improved governance, local livelihoods, climate mitigation and adaptation.
Sub-themes under Theme 3 include:
i) gender empowerment and social inclusion,
ii) forestry governance,
iii) local livelihoods,
iv) climate change mitigation, and
v) climate change adaptation.

Call for papers/posters

The organizing committee invites papers/posters from interested individuals, organizations, research institutions and academia on the three themes of the conference. Interested participants are requested to submit an abstract (max. 300 words) of their work mentioning the thematic area to the conference secretariat by September 23, 2016. It is suggested that the abstract covers introduction, objectives, methods, results and conclusion. The submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the organizing committee or the technical team assigned by the organizing committee. The authors whose abstract has been accepted will be invited to submit a full paper (max. 10 pages) and make a presentation at the conference.


The organizing committee invites interested individuals and representatives from the government, non-government including civil society organizations, academic institutions, local communities, donors, policy makers and international organizations to participate in the conference. The committee has expected about 100 participants from local, national and international arena.
